Olivia’s House thrives because of the support of our amazing volunteers! There is a plethora of volunteer opportunities available to support our mission. From working directly with the children, to gardening, to everything in-between, the sky is the limit. We try to match up the skills of the folks that walk through our doors to the many needs that keep our grief center functioning! We have outlined some of our regular volunteer needs below. If you have some free time and would like to make a difference, please contact our Development Director.

Companions:
According to our mentor, Alan Wolfelt, “companioning the bereaved is not about assessing, analyzing, fixing, or resolving another’s grief. Instead, it is about being totally present to the mourner, a temporary guardian of their soul.” Our Companion volunteers must complete the Olivia’s House twelve-hour training to work directly with the children in our educational peer support programs. All Companion volunteers will receive a criminal background check and a child abuse clearance from the state where they reside.

Cookie Companions:
If you are someone who enjoys baking, being a Cookie Companion is the perfect role for you! Our Cookie Companions volunteer to bake delicious cookies and treats for an evening of programming.

Front Desk Greeters:
A volunteer in this vital role supports the staff by answering phones, greeting visitors with a smile, helping with the Lending Library check in and check out, and light clerical work when needed.

Gardeners:
A garden volunteer does not require a green thumb but is responsible for helping to weed flowerbeds, rake leaves, plant and water flowers, paint garden rocks, and sweep walkways.

Housekeepers:
Our York and Hanover centers are an extension of our staff, and we take pride in their appearance. Volunteering to do light housekeeping would include, but not be limited to, vacuuming, dusting, mopping, and wiping down surfaces, mirrors, and doors.

Gala Auction Liaisons:
The Olivian Gala is our single largest fundraising event. Attendees (both virtual and in-person) love participating in our renowned silent auction. Gala Auction Liaisons connect with businesses all year long to procure the coveted items and donations which comprise the auction.

Handwriting Helpers:
Penmanship is not a thing of the past at Olivia’s House. We believe in hand-addressed correspondence. If you are someone who has beautiful handwriting, the staff could really use your support during event season to help with addressing our appeal envelopes.

Internships:
Olivia’s House offers undergraduate- and graduate-level internships. A student must contact the Executive Director for an appointment to interview for any internship. We have hosted various interns, including but not limited to: Programming, Development, Grant Writing, Graphic Design, Photography, and Masters Level Clinical Counseling.
