A Heart-to-Heart With: ILKA THOMPSON

Ilka Thompson How did you become involved with Olivia's House?
In 2005 , I lost my husband and my 5 year old Grandson lost his Pop-pop. My Grandson was very close to his Pop-pop and had a very difficult time after his death. We heard about Olivia's House and he completed The Hearts Can Heal Program. The program was so beneficial to my grandson's emotional well being, that's when I started contributing.

What is your favorite memory of Olivia's House?
My favorite memories of Olivia's House are the brick ceremonies. Purchasing a brick with your loved ones name on it and placing it in the garden at Olivia's House gives me great comfort.

You've been such a supporter of Olivia's House in so many ways and have attended several events, do you have a favorite event?
The Olivian Gala in March 2010. I sponsored a table for all of my husbands brothers, sister and my children. We all felt the presence of our loved ones that night and had fun with the auction and dancing.

Who are your heroes?
My grandmother is one of the people I consider a hero. During WW2 she lost her husband in the invasion of Germany. She had 3 children at the time that needed to be fed and cared for and now they became refugees in their own country. I spend many years being raised by my Grandmom and she became such an influence in my life. I would also consider my mother-in-law as one of my heroes. She was so caring and patient with me when I moved to this new country as a young girl that had a hard time opening her heart to anyone.

What would people be surprised to know about you?
Born and raised for the first 18 years of my life in Germany and then coming to America, I love my life here and I love this country so much. When I see the flag wave in the wind I think of how fortunate and blessed I am to live here.

What can always be found in your refrigerator?
Turkey Hill Diet Green Tea

What TV shows do you watch?
I love to watch old reruns like Bonanza, The Waltons. I also watch shows on selling real estate and cooking and of course Dancing with the Stars.

Describe what would be your perfect vacation?
I love travelling to other countries, especially in Europe. I love learning their way of life and their culture, the food they eat and of course, the desserts.

What is your proudest accomplishment?
Being married for almost 35 years before my husband died, coming to the United States, learning a new life, language, new family and friends.
